Description

7139-159B CAV Lucas DPA Fuel Pulsation Damper with Check Ball

Replacement fuel pulsation damper with check ball for compatible CAV, Lucas, and Delphi DPA rotary diesel injection pumps.

This damper is commonly identified by part number 7139-159B and is also associated with 7139-159C applications. It is frequently found on DPA injection pumps fitted to Perkins-powered tractors, agricultural equipment, industrial engines, and other older diesel applications.

The damper supplied in this listing has a 3/4-inch hex. It includes the small check ball and arrives with the two shaft O-rings already installed.

Verify the complete injection pump number and compare the original damper before ordering. CAV and Lucas DPA pumps use several similar-looking dampers that are not interchangeable.

What Does the DPA Fuel Pulsation Damper Do?

The fuel pulsation damper is installed in the hydraulic advance area of compatible CAV, Lucas, and Delphi DPA injection pumps.

As the injection pump operates, pressure inside the pump gallery naturally rises and falls. The damper helps control these pressure fluctuations so the internal gallery pressure does not rise excessively or fall too low.

Stable internal pressure is important to the operation of the pump’s hydraulic advance system and fuel delivery components. The damper is therefore more than a simple plug or cover bolt.

Common Signs of a Failed Fuel Damper

The most recognizable sign of a failed DPA fuel damper is diesel fuel leaking from the small vent or weep hole in the face of the damper.

Common symptoms may include:

  • Diesel fuel dripping from the front or lower area of the injection pump
  • Fuel leaking from the small hole in the damper face
  • A leak that appears only while the engine is running
  • Fuel collecting beneath the injection pump
  • Wetness around the hydraulic advance housing
  • A leak that returns after the outside of the pump has been cleaned
  • An original damper that is cracked, corroded, or physically damaged

Fuel coming through the vent hole generally indicates an internal failure within the damper. The damper is normally replaced as a complete unit rather than repaired internally.

Not every leak near the bottom of a DPA pump comes from the pulsation damper. Carefully clean and inspect the pump before ordering. Fuel can travel along the pump housing from a leaking fitting, advance cover, throttle shaft, shutoff shaft, or another sealing point.

7139-159B Versus 7139-159A

CAV and Lucas DPA pumps commonly use more than one fuel damper design. The easiest visible difference between these two versions is the hex size.

  • 7139-159B: Uses a 3/4-inch wrench and may use the small check ball supplied with this listing.
  • 7139-159A: Uses a smaller 1/2-inch wrench and is a different damper configuration.

Do not order solely because the pump is a CAV or Lucas DPA. Compare the wrench size, original damper, pump model number, and check-ball arrangement.

If your original damper uses a 1/2-inch wrench, see our 7139-159A CAV Lucas DPA fuel damper.

About the Included Check Ball

This listing includes the small check ball used with applicable pump configurations.

On pumps that require it, the ball is installed in the side passage of the damper shaft between the two O-rings. The ball may remain inside the injection pump when the old damper is removed, so inspect the pump carefully before installing the new part.

Not every pump using this style of damper requires the loose check ball. Reassemble the pump according to its original configuration and the applicable service information. Do not add or omit the ball based only on another pump or an online photograph.

This is not a complete application list. Many additional DPA pumps use this damper.

Numbers stamped or cast into the pump housing may not be the complete pump model. Look for the identification tag or stamped model number containing a sequence similar to 3241F350 or 3263F621.

Common Engine and Equipment Applications

This damper is most commonly associated with CAV and Lucas DPA pumps used on Perkins diesel engines. Compatible pumps may be found on equipment from manufacturers including:

  • Massey Ferguson
  • John Deere
  • Ford and New Holland
  • Case and Case IH
  • Long and UTB
  • Landini
  • JCB
  • Industrial and stationary diesel equipment
  • Marine and generator applications using a matching DPA pump

The equipment manufacturer or tractor model alone does not confirm fitment. These manufacturers used many different CAV, Lucas, and Delphi pump configurations over the years.

The complete injection pump model number is the most reliable way to identify the correct damper.

Perkins DPA Injection Pump Applications

The 7139-159B damper is particularly common on DPA pumps fitted to Perkins diesel engines, including many six-cylinder applications.

Customers may search for this part using terms such as:

  • Perkins injection pump leaking diesel
  • Perkins DPA fuel damper
  • Perkins 6-cylinder injection pump damper
  • Massey Ferguson fuel pump damper
  • CAV pump leaking from weep hole
  • Lucas pump leaking from front damper

Perkins engines and Massey Ferguson tractors were built with numerous pump models. Always verify the number on the injection pump rather than ordering from the engine or tractor model alone.

How to Confirm This Is the Correct Damper

Before ordering, check the following:

  • The complete CAV, Lucas, or Delphi injection pump model number
  • The original damper part number, if visible
  • The 3/4-inch hex size
  • The location and shape of the original damper
  • The two O-ring grooves on the damper shaft
  • Whether the original pump configuration uses the small check ball
  • The pump parts breakdown or service information when available

Do not use the engine casting number, tractor serial number, or a number from the engine data plate as a substitute for the injection pump number.

If you are uncertain, send us the complete model number from the injection pump before ordering.

Installation Notes

  • Clean dirt and loose debris from the outside of the injection pump before removing the old damper.
  • Work in a clean area to prevent contamination from entering the pump.
  • Place a clean container or absorbent material beneath the pump to catch escaping diesel fuel.
  • Remove the old damper carefully and watch for the small check ball.
  • Inspect the pump passage to determine whether the old ball remained inside.
  • Compare the new damper, hex size, shaft, O-ring locations, and passages with the original.
  • Use the check ball only when required by the original pump configuration.
  • Lubricate the O-rings lightly with clean diesel fuel before installation.
  • Insert the damper carefully so the O-rings are not cut or displaced.
  • Start the threads by hand to prevent cross-threading the advance housing.
  • After installation, run the engine and inspect the damper and surrounding pump area for leakage.

Diesel injection pumps are precision fuel-system components. Installation should be performed by someone familiar with CAV and Lucas DPA injection pumps. Follow the applicable pump or engine service procedure whenever available.
