  • Cast filter head and mounting bracket
  • Replaceable CAV 296-style fuel-filter element
  • Clear plastic water and sediment bowl
  • Bottom drain valve
  • Center retaining hardware
  • Element and bowl sealing components
  • Fuel-port plugs and vent hardware as supplied with the assembly

Inspect the product photographs before ordering if a particular fitting, plug, or mounting component is required.

What Does the Fuel/Water Separator Do?

This assembly combines primary diesel-fuel filtration with water and sediment separation.

Diesel fuel entering the housing passes through the replaceable filter element before continuing toward the fuel lift pump or injection system. Water and heavier contamination collect in the clear lower bowl, where they can be seen and drained without replacing the entire assembly.

The clear bowl makes it easier to monitor for:

  • Water contamination
  • Rust and sediment
  • Algae or microbial contamination
  • Dirty or discolored diesel fuel
  • Unexpected debris from the fuel tank

Regular inspection and draining help keep water and abrasive contamination away from the fuel lift pump, injection pump, and injectors.

Common Reasons to Replace the Complete Assembly

A complete filter assembly may be needed when:

  • The original filter head is cracked or corroded
  • Fuel leaks around the head, center bolt, or port threads
  • The clear water bowl is cracked, cloudy, or damaged
  • The drain valve leaks or no longer operates correctly
  • The mounting bracket is broken or badly rusted
  • The original housing has missing or damaged components
  • The filter assembly has been contaminated internally
  • An engine conversion needs a serviceable primary fuel filter
  • A disposable inline filter is being upgraded to a drainable water separator
  • The existing system uses 5836B240, 5836B280, or a confirmed equivalent number

If the housing and bowl are still in good condition, you may only need a replacement CAV 296-style filter element and new seals rather than the complete assembly.

  • Select additional Fiat tractors using filter assembly 5836B240, 5836B280, 4612229, or 4612227

Fitment is not guaranteed by tractor model alone. Fiat used more than one filter head and fuel-port thread arrangement on some models. Confirm that the original assembly uses M14×1.5 inlet and outlet ports.

UTB and Universal Tractor Applications

The same general M14×1.5 single-filter assembly is also commonly cataloged for select Romanian-built UTB and Universal tractors, including:

  • UTB 445
  • UTB 530
  • Select Universal tractor applications using the matching CAV-style filter housing

These tractors may have been repaired or converted using different fuel-filter heads over the years. Compare the original housing, mounting arrangement, and port threads before ordering.

Fiat and Iveco Truck Applications

Published cross-reference information also associates this filter assembly with select Fiat and Iveco commercial vehicles, including:

  • Fiat 50 NC
  • Iveco 50 NC
  • Select older Fiat-OM and Iveco commercial vehicles using the matching M14×1.5 housing

Commercial-vehicle fitment can vary by engine and production year. Confirm the original filter number or fuel-port thread before installation.

Common Iveco Industrial Engine Applications

The 5836B280-style filter assembly is also cataloged with several older Fiat and Iveco industrial diesel-engine families.

Published engine references include select versions of:

  • Iveco 8035.01
  • Iveco 8035.02
  • Iveco 8035.04
  • Iveco 8035.05
  • Iveco 8035.06
  • Iveco 8045.02
  • Iveco 8045.04
  • Iveco 8045.05
  • Iveco 8045.06
  • Iveco 8045.25
  • Iveco 8055.05
  • Iveco 8065.05
  • Iveco 8065.06
  • Iveco 8065.25
  • Iveco 8365.25

These engine families were used in agricultural, industrial, construction, generator, and commercial-vehicle applications. Engine model alone does not guarantee that the same filter head remains installed.

5836B280 Versus 5836B100

The 5836B280 and 5836B100 assemblies look very similar and use the same general CAV 296-style filter arrangement, but their fuel-port threads are different.

  • 5836B280 / 5836B240: M14×1.5 inlet and outlet ports
  • 5836B100: Normally 1/2″-20 UNF inlet and outlet ports

The existing fuel-line fittings will not directly interchange between these two thread sizes.

Before ordering, remove or inspect one original fitting and confirm whether the housing uses metric M14×1.5 threads or 1/2″-20 UNF threads. Do not identify the filter assembly by appearance alone.

Replacement Filter Element

This assembly uses the widely available CAV 296-style replacement filter element.

Common descriptions and references for the element include:

  • F296
  • CAV 296
  • HDF296-style filter element
  • Baldwin BF825-style element
  • Diesel fuel-filter cartridge

Replacement-element cross-references can vary by manufacturer. Compare the element dimensions and sealing arrangement before installation.

Common Symptoms of a Restricted Fuel Filter

A dirty or restricted filter element may reduce fuel flow to the engine. Possible symptoms include:

  • Hard starting
  • Engine starts and then stalls
  • Loss of power under load
  • Engine runs normally at idle but struggles at higher speed
  • Surging or uneven operation
  • Injection pump appears to lose fuel supply
  • Frequent need to bleed or prime the fuel system
  • Visible dirt or water in the lower bowl

Similar symptoms may also result from air leaks, blocked fuel lines, tank contamination, a weak lift pump, restricted tank venting, or an injection-system problem.

Common Causes of Fuel Leakage

Fuel leaks around a CAV 296-style filter assembly may come from:

  • Incorrect or damaged fuel-port fittings
  • Wrong thread fittings forced into the filter head
  • Loose fuel-line connections
  • A damaged filter-element sealing ring
  • A pinched or incorrectly positioned bowl seal
  • A cracked clear bowl
  • A loose or damaged center retaining bolt
  • A leaking bottom drain valve
  • Corrosion or cracking in the original filter head

Clean the assembly and identify the exact leak point before replacing individual components.

Suitable for Custom and Engine-Conversion Applications

This assembly may also be used as a serviceable primary diesel filter on custom equipment when the installer confirms:

  • The engine fuel-flow requirement is suitable
  • M14×1.5 fittings are available
  • The housing can be mounted vertically
  • There is enough clearance to remove the bowl and element
  • The filter is installed on the correct low-pressure side of the fuel system
  • The selected hose and fittings are rated for diesel fuel

This filter should not be installed on the high-pressure side of a common-rail or mechanical injection system.

How to Identify the Correct Filter Assembly

This product is useful for customers searching by tractor or engine model rather than by the number stamped on the original filter housing.

Before ordering, verify all of the following:

  • The original assembly is a single CAV-style fuel filter with a lower sediment bowl
  • The filter uses an F296 or CAV 296-style replaceable element
  • The fuel inlet port is M14×1.5
  • The fuel outlet port is M14×1.5
  • The mounting-hole spacing and bracket arrangement match
  • There is enough room beneath the assembly to remove the bowl and element
  • The direction and routing of the original fuel lines match the new housing

Do not identify this assembly by appearance alone. Very similar CAV filter units are available with 1/2″-20 UNF ports. The fuel-line fittings from those housings will not thread correctly into this M14×1.5 version.

Installation Notes

  • Disconnect battery power and shut off the fuel supply when possible.
  • Clean dirt and debris from the surrounding area before disconnecting the fuel lines.
  • Drain fuel into an approved container.
  • Confirm the thread of every fitting before installing it into the new filter head.
  • Do not force 1/2″-20 UNF fittings into the M14×1.5 ports.
  • Use diesel-compatible fittings and sealing methods appropriate for the connection design.
  • Mount the assembly vertically with enough space below it to service the element and bowl.
  • Confirm the fuel-inlet and outlet routing before connecting the lines.
  • Prime and bleed the low-pressure fuel system after installation.
  • Start the engine and inspect every port, seal, and drain connection for leakage.
  • Recheck the assembly after the engine has operated under load.

Why Choose This Replacement Assembly?
