Genuine Delphi 7185-900W 12V Fuel Shutoff Solenoid
This is a genuine Delphi fuel shutoff solenoid for many CAV, Lucas, and Delphi rotary diesel injection pumps. The current Delphi service part number is 7185-900W, replacing the older 7167-620A solenoid used on many DPA, DPS, DPC, and select DP200 pump applications.
This is the genuine Delphi part shown in the product photos, not an unmarked generic replacement. It is commonly used on injection pumps installed on Ford and New Holland tractors, John Deere equipment, Case and Case IH machines, Perkins-powered equipment, industrial engines, backhoes, skid steers, and other diesel applications.
Voltage: 12 volts. Do not install this solenoid on a 24-volt electrical system.

What Does the Fuel Shutoff Solenoid Do?
This solenoid controls fuel flow inside the injection pump when the ignition switch is turned on or off.
With the key switched on, the solenoid receives 12 volts and retracts its internal plunger, allowing fuel to flow through the pump. When the key is switched off, power is removed and the plunger closes the fuel passage, stopping the engine.
Because this is an energized-to-run solenoid, the engine may crank normally but fail to start if the solenoid does not receive power or if the internal coil or plunger has failed.
Common Signs of a Bad Fuel Shutoff Solenoid
A failed solenoid or a problem in its electrical circuit can cause symptoms including:
- Engine cranks but will not start
- No fuel reaching the injector lines
- Engine starts only after the solenoid is manually bypassed
- Engine shuts down unexpectedly while operating
- Intermittent starting or stalling when the machine is hot
- No click from the injection pump when the key is switched on
- Engine continues running after the ignition is switched off
- Damaged, loose, or corroded electrical terminal on the old solenoid
- Fuel leaking around the solenoid body or sealing area
These symptoms do not automatically mean the solenoid itself is defective. A bad ignition switch, broken wire, weak connection, blown fuse, poor pump ground, or low system voltage can produce similar problems.
Quick Checks Before Ordering a New Solenoid
- Confirm the machine has a 12-volt electrical system. This solenoid is not intended for 24-volt applications.
- Check for battery voltage at the solenoid terminal with the key on. No voltage usually indicates a wiring, fuse, switch, or relay problem rather than a failed solenoid.
- Listen or feel for a click. A working solenoid will normally move its plunger when power is applied.
- Check the pump ground. This is a single-terminal solenoid that grounds through its metal body and the injection pump.
- Compare the pump number and old solenoid number. Similar-looking CAV and Delphi solenoids are available in several voltages and internal configurations.

Older Screw Terminal Versus New Stud Terminal
Some original 7167-620A and 7185-900W solenoids used a screw or bolt to attach the electrical wire. The current genuine Delphi service replacement uses a threaded stud with a washer and nut.
This terminal change is normal. The solenoid still performs the same fuel shutoff function, but the existing wire must have a suitable ring terminal that fits over the new stud.
Do not overtighten the small terminal nut. The nut only needs to hold the electrical connection securely. Excessive force can damage or rotate the insulated terminal.

Installation Notes
- Disconnect battery power before removing the old solenoid.
- Clean dirt and debris from the area before opening the injection pump.
- Compare the old and new plungers, springs, seals, and terminal arrangement before installation.
- Start the pump threads by hand to prevent cross-threading.
- Do not overtighten the electrical terminal nut.
- After installation, switch the key on and verify that the solenoid operates.
