Description

Genuine Delphi 7185-900T 12V Fuel Shutoff Solenoid

This is a genuine Delphi 12-volt fuel shutoff solenoid for many CAV, Lucas, and Delphi rotary diesel injection pumps. The current Delphi service part number is 7185-900T, replacing older numbers including 7167-620D, 7167-620C, and 76579D.

This solenoid is commonly used on DPA, DPS, and DP200 injection pumps installed on Perkins engines, Massey Ferguson tractors, JCB equipment, Caterpillar applications, Case and Case IH equipment, Landini tractors, and other agricultural or industrial diesel machinery.

This is the twin-terminal version. It has two flat blade or Lucar-style electrical terminals. One terminal receives switched 12-volt power and the other connects to ground through the machine wiring.

Do not confuse this solenoid with the single-terminal 7185-900W. The terminal and grounding arrangement must match the pump and equipment wiring.

What Does the Fuel Shutoff Solenoid Do?

The fuel shutoff solenoid opens and closes the internal fuel passage in the injection pump as the ignition switch is turned on or off.

This is an energized-to-run solenoid. With the ignition switched on, 12-volt power energizes the solenoid and retracts its internal plunger, allowing the injection pump to deliver fuel. When the ignition is switched off, power is removed and the plunger closes the fuel passage, stopping the engine.

If the solenoid fails to open, the engine may crank normally but receive no injection fuel. If the plunger sticks in the open position, the engine may continue running after the key is switched off.

Common Signs of a Bad Shutoff Solenoid

A failed solenoid or a fault in its electrical circuit may cause symptoms including:

  • Engine cranks but will not start
  • No fuel reaching the injector lines
  • No movement or click when 12 volts is applied
  • Engine starts intermittently
  • Engine shuts down unexpectedly while operating
  • Engine stalls after the ignition circuit loses power
  • Engine continues running after the key is switched off
  • Solenoid works cold but stops operating when hot
  • Loose, damaged, or corroded spade terminals
  • Fuel leakage around the solenoid sealing area

These symptoms do not automatically prove that the solenoid is defective. A blown fuse, failed ignition switch, broken wire, poor ground connection, weak terminal connection, low system voltage, or internal injection pump problem may produce similar symptoms.

Quick Checks Before Ordering

  1. Confirm the equipment uses a 12-volt electrical system. Do not install this solenoid on a 24-volt system.
  2. Check the terminal style. This version has two flat blade terminals, not one central stud.
  3. Check for switched power. One terminal should receive battery voltage with the ignition in the run position.
  4. Check the ground circuit. The second terminal must have a good ground connection. Do not depend on the injection pump body to ground this two-terminal version.
  5. Listen or feel for movement. The internal plunger should move when the solenoid is energized.

Important Fitment Information

Do not order this solenoid using the tractor or equipment model alone. The same machine may have been produced with different injection pumps, and a replacement pump may have been installed during its service life.

The best way to confirm compatibility is to compare:

  • The equipment system voltage
  • The two-terminal electrical connection
